In the MarsLabor at the University of Basel, we investigate how surface processes shape Martian landscapes and record environmental change. Using laboratory experiments, terrestrial analogues, and parabolic flight campaigns, the team studies sediment transport, soil formation, and erosion under Martian gravity conditions. The Marslabor also contributes to ESA's ExoMars mission by testing and developing the use of the Close-Up Imager (CLUPI) for detailed rock texture and structure analysis, improving the interpretation of Martian surface materials. By linking process-based studies on Earth with planetary observations, the MarsLabor advances understanding of Mars' dynamic surface and environmental evolution.

Is there life on Mars

Or did living creatures once exist on the Red Planet? Researchers have been investigating this question for many years. A Mars mission, which will start in 2028, will try to find out. ESA is sending a new rover to the Red Planet for this purpose.
