Recording, organizing, depicting and explaining the earth's surface
Physiogeography is concerned with the collection and presentation of information about the Earth's landscapes and the processes that shape them. The collected data is organized into uniform or comparable spaces. The formation of these individual spaces and their patterns are also explained, thus achieving an understanding of the function and history of individual landscapes. In addition to the goal of gaining an understanding of the Earth's landscapes, the presentation of the results, usually in the form of maps, is another task of geography.
Based on these objectives, the study of physical geography in Basel comprises three focal areas:
1.an understanding of the properties and processes (on) the earth's surface, including their interaction and the consequences of change by humans.
2.the collection and processing of spatial data.
3.the study of individual landscapes, their history and their future development, particularly from a perspective that views the earth's surface as a habitat for humans.
