In the Imaging Lab, we have a wide range of options for capturing, analyzing and processing image and remote sensing data. Our infrastructure includes state-of-the-art RPAV (Remotely Piloted Aerial Vehicles) systems and specialized imaging technologies that are used for research and applied projects in Switzerland, Europe and South Africa.

The data obtained provides valuable information for environmental analysis, geomonitoring, land cover mapping and experimental research.

Regular work carried out in the laboratory includes

• Acquisition of high-resolution aerial images and 3D models with professional drones (including DJI Matrice 350 RTK with Zenmuse L2, Mavic M3M, Mavic M3T)
• Creation of orthomosaics, point clouds and digital elevation models
• Calibration and validation of satellite images
• Data fusion for recognizing and classifying vegetation species (species recognition) and for analysing land cover
• Topographic analysis and mapping for environmental and research applications
• Processing and analysis of image data with Pix4D, DJI Terra, ArcGIS Pro, Google Earth Engine and R
• Evaluation of international data sets, e.g. from Qatar, to investigate surface features and determine the extent of sabchas
• Accompanying experimental research with visual measurement technology - for example to analyze particle movements in liquids under reduced gravity during reduced gravity flights

In addition to image analysis, we support research projects from data acquisition to complex evaluation - in a flexible, interdisciplinary and practical manner.
